What Is Baduanjin?

Baduanjin is a sequence of eight traditional Chinese exercises commonly practiced with slow, deliberate movement and natural breathing. The English phrase “Eight Pieces of Brocade” points to the idea of something woven, refined, and valuable.

Why eight movements?

Modern routines usually present eight named sections, but wording and performance vary among teachers and lineages. The sequence is best understood as a family of related practices rather than one frozen choreography.

How to approach it

Begin gently and value ease over range. A clear, comfortable movement is more useful than forcing a dramatic posture. If pain, dizziness, or unusual symptoms occur, stop and seek appropriate professional advice.
